Rattan Furniture FAQs...

What is rattan? What is rattan good for? Is rattan UV resistant? If you’ve got a question about rattan furniture, we’ve got the answer. Just take a look at our garden furniture guide, or contact our team today…

Is the rattan fibre resistant to U.V?

Yes. We use the best German fibre available; our supplier is recognised as a global leader in rattan fibre manufacture. Our furniture was originally designed for New Zealand and Australian conditions, a climate where extreme U.V and high rain fall are the norm.

In our industry there are two brands of fibre recognised as market leaders; Rehau and Hularo. Both are German.

What is rattan furniture?

Rattan, wicker, wicker rattan, cane (in polyethelene form), and all weather garden furniture are all names for the same class of product. The product was created because customers wanted to take their furniture outdoors. Natural cane and rattan will rot and break down outdoors. Hence PE rattan was created. Designs and styles of rattan furniture have moved on so quickly in recent years that we are now witnessing customers putting this kind of furniture inside their homes. So why not have the best of both worlds? Take our Riviera - it looks stunning indoors, but with the Quick Dry Foam as standard it will also perform flawlessly outside for years. It is important to note that there is a wide range of products offered on the market from very poor plastic to top end fibres made in Germany. We encourage customers to do their research. Despite what some vendors will tell you, synthetic weaving material is not all the same.

Can I leave my cushions outside in bad weather?

You should be able to leave cushions out in all weather provided the fabric is a solution dyed acrylic and the cushion uses reticulated marine foam. We do not use anything else. At iola we only use the best.

Will the fibre fade?

Iola fibre will not fade. We use the global leading brand made in Germany.

Why do you use stainless steel feet and others use alloy?

We use Stainless Steel because it not only looks a lot nicer, it is more corrosion resistant. Ask yourself why you only find stainless steel on boats. Take our Modular range. 90% of the market uses alloy feet. Why? Because it’s cheap. Alloy corrodes. The rest of the market use 304 standard grade stainless; we are one of two suppliers globally who use 316 marine grade stainless. Another example of our attention; when we claim to use only the best materials, we can support it!

What is the warranty?

All our products are covered 3 years on the wicker and 5 years on frames.

How do I know I am getting a good product?

We get asked this question a lot with hundreds of rattan furniture suppliers in the market place, all using the word ‘quality’. It is simply untrue. Everyone has a price point in mind and we are very conscious of that. However, rattan furniture is a unique product which either incorporates very good materials or very poor materials. There is nothing in between. For example, German fibres are the best, Sunbrella is an excellent fabric, marine reticulated foam is a must have, commercial grade frames (1.6mm+) are superior, marine grade stainless( 316) is the best metal for exterior applications. Other considerations:
  • Are the weavers highly skilled? Weavers from Cebu are the best!
  • What is the warranty and are there pages of exclusions?

In our experience vendors will tell their customers anything in order to gain a sale. Here are a few truths about our industry
  • There is no such thing as a waterproof cushion. A cushion should breath. This is why we believe reticulated foam which allows water to pass through the cushion is a must have.
  • You cannot buy a quality Carver style dining chair (and cushion) for under £250. The starting point for a quality dining set (eight seater) is at least £2500. If it’s less it is not a quality product.
  • Non German fibres are mainly PVC. They are recycled plastic and will not last. There are two recognised brands of fibre. Both are German.
  • The minimum alloy gauge used in our industry is 1.2mm. A classic sign of a poor product.
  • Dining tables with detachable legs (a.k.a knock down) will have no structural integrity. Products built in this way are designed to take up minimal space i.e. cheap freight.
  • Vendors supplying a quality product will provide a great level of detail about the materials they use.

In summary, the answer to this question is quite simple. If you are reading this entire section, you are discerning and care about the product you are purchasing. Our best advice: look at the key components of the product; fibre, frame, fabric, foam, metal fittings, weavers, design and price, before determining whether each component the vendor has chosen to use is a branded / quality material. We encourage customers to do their research. There is a wealth of information on the internet which supports exactly what we are saying. We are transparent in how our product is made and the materials used because we know they are the highest quality available.

Why buy from iola?

Any product you purchase should be durable, functional as well as stylish. It must also meet your price point. Outdoor furniture is placed in the harshest of environments where any weakness will be exposed by the elements. All weather garden furniture is the only product we deal with. We use the best materials available, our designs are striking and unique and we aim to meet a middle market price point. There are no other suppliers in Europe who offers such a proposition. In New Zealand and Australia where we began, our product is the number one selling premium rattan product on the market. We compete in those markets with all the major European brands available here in the UK. Our bill of materials is equal to or exceeds all; however, we still outsell them by some margin.

It is very easy to produce a very good yet very expensive product. No doubt the reason for our success is down to the fact our product is unsurpassed yet we manage to meet the middle market price wise. We manage this as we are the designer, the manufacturer and the importer.

We hope we have provided you with a wealth of information. We are very proud of our product yet we try to remain objective. We encourage all of our prospective customers to research their purchase thoroughly.
